NEW ENGLAND AUTUMN
Departing: Saturday, September 23, 2017
9 Days

"New England is one of our most popular tours with many travelers taking it numerous times ... so it is my goal to make it different each time it is offered.  This year is no exception showcasing some of my favorite New England attractions." -Annette

This tour will take us through Vermont, New Hampshire, and into southern Maine.  From the calm shores of Lake Champlain to the rocky shores of the Atlantic Ocean, you will dine on upscale meals and coastal favorites.  A perfect time to getaway with family and friends to explore a spectacular part of our country!  “Autumn ... the year’s last, loveliest smile.” -William Cullen Bryant
Daily Itinerary:
Day 1 Depart Terre Haute traveling into New York with lunch and rest stops along the way.
Day 2 Continue our journey to Vergennes, Vermont, arriving at The Basin Harbor Club early evening.  Relax and unwind at this beautiful waterfront getaway nestled on the shores of sparkling Lake Champlain, with manicured grounds and incredible views.  The Basin Harbor Club is not a typical hotel.  It is a resort with cottages and no two are alike.  (Rooms are equipped with phone and wi-fi, but no televisions.)  Dinner this evening will be at the Basin Harbor Club.
Day 3 This morning we will enjoy a Shipwrecks Cruise.  Explore and discover the incredibly well preserved 1800’s wooden shipwrecks that lie on the bottom of Lake Champlain.  They deploy a remotely operated vehicle and by viewing the screens onboard the boat, you will be part of the exploration of the wrecks from the surface.  You will not only learn about the wrecks but also rich narrative history of Lake Champlain.  Next, we will visit Morgan Horse Farm.  The University of Vermont is in charge of staffing this farm and it is dedicated to maintaining and training Vermont’s state animal.  You will learn about its history and see the beautiful Morgan’s up close and personal!  Continue on to Middlebury, Vermont to enjoy lunch and shopping in a quaint village filled with interesting shops and bistros.  Return to Basin Harbor Club for an afternoon of relaxation or choose to visit Lake Champlain Maritime Museum.  Explore some of the lake’s over 300 historic shipwrecks in their Nautical Archaeology Center.  Learn what made this area so pivotal to Benedict Arnold’s fleet during the American Revolution.  Step aboard replica 1776 gunboat Philadelphia II, docked at their scenic Lake Champlain waterfront.  Dinner this evening will be at the Basin Harbor Club.
Day 4 Travel to Montpelier, the smallest capital in the nation for a quick photo stop outside of one of the prettiest state houses in our nation.  Next, visit the Morse Farm.  Have you ever heard of sugar on snow?  It’s the Vermont term for fresh maple syrup, heated until it turns into a taffy-like confection, then drizzled over pure white snow (ice).  It is heavenly, and Morse Farm, a seventh-generation maple syrup producer, still makes it the old-fashioned way, serving their sugar on snow with sour pickles, which helps to lighten its deep maple sweetness.  “Burr” Morse will entertain with tales of his family’s maple sugarin’ adventures, multimedia displays in their real Woodshed Theater, whimsical woodcarvings made by Burr himself, and a wonderful maple “country store” gift shop that truly has something for everyone.  It takes forty gallons of maple sap to produce just one gallon of pure Vermont maple syrup, and you will thoroughly enjoy learning this and many other tasty facts about maple sugarin’ at Morse Farm.  Travel to the Mount Washington Cog Railway.  The beauty of the mountains and the thrill of ascending the Northeast’s highest peak are just as enchanting today as they were in 1869, when Sylvester Marsh opened the world’s first mountain climbing railroad on New Hampshire’s Mount Washington.  Nearly 150 years later, the Mount Washington Cog Railway continues to provide a sense of adventure and history as it carries passengers up a three-mile-long trestle and the steepest railroad tracks in North America to the 6,288-foot summit of Mount Washington.  There, visitors can take in the spectacular panoramic view, spanning the mountains and valleys of New Hampshire, Maine, and Vermont, north into Canada, and east to the Atlantic Ocean.  Travel to North Conway, New Hampshire for the night and a free evening at Settlers Green.
Day 5 As we depart for Maine this morning, our first stop is at Maine Balsam Fir Products, which includes a tour and hands-on make-your-own mini balsam bag.  Balsam, in the language of herbs, stands for warm friendship.  In June of 2005, Jack and Wendy Newmeyer opened their “factory outlet” store that showcases a host of their products.  You’ll find unique birch bark containers handmade by Jack, balsam oil and soap, hundreds of their trademark pillows to choose from, and many one-of-a-kind items.  We will then visit Norlands Living History Center.  Enjoy a house tour with “The Busy Cradle” program which is the Washburn Family history who had political and business connections in the late 1800’s through the 1900’s.  The “Laugh and Learn” schoolhouse program is a 19th century presentation which will have you chuckling.  This afternoon we will make our way into Wells, Maine, our home for two nights.  Dinner tonight will be at a local favorite.
Day 6 Today, we will depart for a full day of touring to include: Portland, Maine Driving Tour - Stopping at the most photographed lighthouse in all of Maine, Portland Headlight.  The light station sits on a head of land at the entrance of the primary shipping channel into Portland Harbor, and was completed in 1791 making it the oldest lighthouse in Maine. • Portland Old Port - Enjoy time for shopping and lunch. • Lighthouse Lover’s Cruise - A narrated 90-minute scenic cruise through Casco Bay and its innermost islands to see lighthouses, forts, lobster boats, seals, and more.  This evening, enjoy a traditional lobster suppah.
Day 7 This morning we will travel to Maine’s most remote and beautiful lighthouse, Nubble Lighthouse.  In order to insure the protection of this valuable Maine treasure, Nubble Lighthouse was placed on the National Register of Historic Places to preserve and protect its historical presence in history.  This is overseen by the United States Secretary of the Interior and the State of Maine’s Historic Preservation Office.  Next, visit the World’s Largest Candle Store, Yankee Candle.  Here at their Village store we will find over 400,000 candles in over 200 famous Yankee scents. It’s a unique entertaining stop of New England charm.  The last stop of the day is at The Naismith Basketball Memorial Hall of Fame in Springfield, home to more than 300 inductees and more than 40,000 feet of basketball history.  Hundreds of interactive exhibits are available.  Overnight in Springfield, Massachusetts.
Day 8 Begin our journey homeward bound today and we will overnight in Pennsylvania.
Day 9 Arrive home this evening with wonderful memories of our East Coast Adventure.
