OLE MAN RIVER

Departing: Saturday, October 6, 2018
2 Days
This tour is a follow up to our 2017 Cabin Fever Cure.  We passed many of these sites but did not have time to visit.  The theme of this tour is all things related to the Ohio RiverA complete tour package, you only purchase one additional meal.

Daily Itinerary:
Day 1 Travel south to Clarksville, Indiana where we will explore the Falls of the Ohio State Park.  This 390-million-year-old fossil bed is among the largest, naturally exposed, Devonian fossil beds in the world. The “Falls” were orignally a series of rapids allowing the Ohio River to drop 26 feet over a distance of two and a half miles.  Next, we will step into the Steamboat Era with a tour of the Howard Steamboat Museum. This beautiful 1894 home was built by premier steamboat builders and features original furnishings, brass chandeliers, stained glass windows, intricate carvings throughout, and even a grand staircase!  Master craftsmen from the shipyard created much of the decor in the mansion. Our next stop is G.A. Schimpff’s Confectionery, founded on April 11, 1891, this business has survived wars, floods, depressions, and recessions through four generations.  Check into our hotel prior to enjoying dinner at a beautiful restaurant on the shores of the Ohio River.
Day 2 Our morning starts at Charlestown State Park - The Site of Rose Island Amusement Park. Once the Louisville area's premier family attraction in the early twentieth century.  The park had a wide array of attractions for its time including a swimming pool, hotel, zoo, and dance hall.  The flood of 1937 essentially wiped out most of the park and it was never reopened.  What is left of the park remains; some parts still standing where they were, others can be found scattered among the fallen leaves and overgrowth.  Next, we board the Belle of Louisville McAlpine Lock Brunch Cruise.  What a great river adventure - a cruise through the McAlpine Lock! This narrated cruise features the history of the lock and the impact it has made on river transportation (river conditions apply). All good things must come to an end as we arrive home this evening.
