Shipshewana is home to the third largest Amish community in the United States.  This tour was created to explore the backroads to visit local Amish businesses. Along our journey we will visit an Amish home to learn about their religious customs. Add in three fulfilling Amish feasts and a hiliarous comedy for a perfect getaway.

FEATURES: Amish Haystack Lunch at The Carriage House, Amish Home - It’s a “topsy turvy” build your own Amish meal many relate to an upside down taco salad.  A specialty in Northern Indiana Amish Country. This meal has a charming story, so it is more than a meal in more ways than one! Up to 12 items are prepared individually and passed family style. You choose what you want to add to your “haystack.” Top it all off with sunshine - a warm cheesy dressing. Heaven on a dinner plate! • Backroads Heritage Trail Tour - Learn about the fascinating lifestyle of the Plain People known as the Ana-Baptists.  Learn about the fascinating lifestyle of the Amish as your knowledgeable guide tells all about the area and the history, traditions, and customs of the Amish.  You will stop at a variety of welcoming country stores and quaint shops. • Anabaptist Around the Globe - Meet Norma Troyer in the family room of her newly constructed Amish home for this one-of-a-kind special presentation.  While your group sits on Amish Church Benches, Norma summarizes the Anabaptist heritage from around the globe thru visual maps and migration patterns from 15th century Europe to today’s America.   She explains the differences in current lifestyles of the Anabaptists faiths (Mennonite, Amish) based upon their geographic location and following customs of their ancestor’s.  She compares the Northern Indiana Amish customs to other communities while following the words based in the Bible.  Enjoy her displays including different styles of head coverings and dress including her mother’s wedding dress and old family quilts.  There will be time for questions and answers followed by the opportunity for guests to see part of her family’s “modern” Amish home. •  Introduction to Braille - Even though Barbara is blind, she will demonstrate how she translates regular books into braille printing for her and others to use while sharing her personal story. • Essenhaus Inn and Resaturant - Enjoy the beautiful Essenhaus grounds!  Relax on a horse drawn carriage ride around the immaculate grounds, play a round of miniature golf, or go shopping in one of several Village Shops  all on the same facility grounds.  Shop for quilts, baked goods, home décor, ladies apparel, Vera Bradley, jewelry and more. • Rise’n Roll Bakery - Wholesome goodness! An Amish style bakery specializing in preservative-free products. • E and S Sales Bulk Foods - The area’s largest bulk food store.  Spices, dried grains, candies, soup mixes, homemade noodles, nuts, snacks and unusual items you can’t find just anywhere. • Davis Mercantile - Featuring over 24 shops located on four floors that are easily accessible by elevator.  You’ll find craft shops gifts, kids toys, apparel, candles and more. • Blue Gate Restaurant and “Half-Stitched, the Musical” in the Blue Gate Music Hall - Begin with the delicious, all-you-can-eat Blue Gate Lunch.  Then go upstairs to the intimate Music Hall and enjoy “Half-Stitched” the Musical production.  What could possibly go wrong when an Amish widow decides to teach a small weekend quilting class?  Cultures collide and personalities clash when six loose threads and an Amish widow spend a weekend together learning a little about quilts, and a lot about themselves. This Broadway-caliber musical will have you bent over laughing, fighting back tears, and humming along to unforgettable melodies. With tens of thousands of standing ovations, come see what all the fuss is about!  Half-Stitched, The Musical is based on Wanda Brunstetter’s novel The Half-Stitched Amish Quilting Club.
