FEATURES: The Red House Interpretive Center - Originally built in 1797 by community founder and French-Canadian, Louis Lorimier, the structure overlooks the banks of the Missouri River. Although the original building was destroyed by a tornado in 1850, the site was rebuilt in 2003 thanks to many volunteers using the poteaux-sur-solle ("post-on-sil") technique once favored by French settlers. In the early 19th Century, the "red house" was the best-known trading post between St. Louis, MO and Memphis, TN. It also served as a fledgling community and government center for the area. In November of 1803, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark stopped to visit with Lorimier's family and purchase supplies for the expedition ahead. The reconstructed house displays several exhibits depicting the lives of the area's early settlers. • Old St. Vincent’s Church - Standing tall as a great majestic monument to the rich religious tradition and spiritual health of Missouri’s Cape Girardeau. Old St. Vincent’s Church is located near the Mississippi riverfront in the Cape Girardeau, Missouri downtown area. The Renaissance architecture, referred to as English Gothic Revival style, is not only beautiful but also rare as very few churches of this style exist in America today.  •  Fort D - Constructed during the beginning of the Civil War in the summer of 1861, Fort D is the only remaining Fort, out of four Civil War Forts, that once protected the City of Cape Girardeau from Confederate attack. The earth walk walls of the fort remain intact and signage throughout the fort recounts the history of Fort D.  •  Dine with a Cape Girardeau Storyteller - Enjoy a meal at Port Cape Girardeau while local storyteller Jerry Ford, weaves a tall tale of life gone by in Cape Girardeau. Jerry is an excellent storyteller and 75% of what he says - is true … the other 25%, well you will just have to speculate. •   Mississippi River Tales Mural and Missouri Wall of Fame - The Mississippi River Tales Mural is the largest and most dramatic of Cape Girardeau’s murals. Covering nearly 18,000 square feet , this 1,100 foot-long mural features 24 panels that vividly portray Cape Girardeau’s rich history and heritage; descriptive markers provide an explanation of each panel.  The Missouri Wall of Fame Mural features 47 individuals who were born in Missouri or achieved fame while living in the state. From Harry S Truman to outlaws Frank and Jesse James, from sports broadcaster Jack Buck to acclaimed author Mark Twain, and so many more who lived in the Show Me State. • Cape Girardeau Heritage Museum - The Cape Girardeau Heritage Museum is located in a local landmark, the old police and fire station dating back to 1908. Regional history exhibits are ever changing and dioramas, interactive and personal presentations add to the experience. The Cape River Heritage Museum is a delightful way to familiarize all ages with what life was once like on the banks of the Mississippi River.
