This tour is extra special as we start in Madison, Indiana and end in Cincinnati, Ohio. We will travel from Madison to Cincinnati via 95 miles of the Ohio River aboard the Celebration Belle, a vessel we have cruised many times on the Mississippi River. Upon arrival in Cincinnati, we will see eight other historic riverboats who are arriving for a festival called America’s River Roots and our fun continues. (This tour is a Pace 3 as we are uncertain of the amount of walking that will be required to access the motorcoach at the festival area and we will have uneven walking as we access the riverboats.)

Daily Itinerary:
Day 1 Monday October 6:   Depart Terre Haute traveling to Madison, Indiana to start our tour. Madison was founded in 1810 as an entry point to the then Indiana Territory on the busy Ohio River. Home to the state’s very first railroad, the Madison and Indianapolis. Madison’s location across from the slave state of Kentucky made it a key location in the Underground Railroad, as well.  For a while one of the three largest cities in the state, Madison thrived thanks to river commerce, which drove construction of buildings that now allow the town to boast of the largest contiguous Landmark Historic District in the U.S. The rise of the railways eroded Madison’s importance in regional trade networks in the 20th century. But the town’s beautiful location on the banks of the Ohio, surrounded by Clifty Falls State Park, as well as its historic charm and rich artistic and cultural offerings make it a popular destination for visitors. Enjoy time to walk, shop, dine, and explore downtown historic Madison. Next, we have a guided tour of the Schroeder Saddletree Factory Museum,  the only one of its kind left in the country!  Visit America’s only restored 19th-century saddletree factory packed with unique and vintage belt-powered woodworking machines.  Tours and exhibits show how the Schroeder family made saddletrees (the internal wooden frames of saddles), clothespins, and other products. Board our motorcoach and make our way into Clifty Falls State Park for our guided History Tour onboard the motorcoach with minimal walking. Home of deep cut gorges, sheet rock walls and plunging waterfalls. Like the proverbial cowboy who first viewed the Grand Canyon one cannot help think, "Something has happened here!"  Clifty Falls and the nearby Ohio River are products of the Ice Age. From the lip of Clifty Falls at an elevation near the general level of the county, Clifty Creek plunges down more than 70 feet. In nearly three miles of canyon, the creek descends another 250 feet to the Ohio River below. There are four major waterfalls and numerous minor ones in the park. For many years, the park consisted of 617 acres which included the falls, the canyon and the immediate upland rim. In 1965, the park was more than doubled in size by the acquisition of adjoining upland fields from the Madison State Hospital.    We arrive at the Clifty Inn - Indiana’s Best Kept Secret! The inn overlooks the Ohio River and dinner is the delicious home cooking of The Falls Restaurant.  The evening is yours to enjoy!

Day 2 Tuesday October 7:  Our morning starts early as we bring our bags to the motorcoach to depart for Madison.  Upon arrival, we will make our way down the river road to board the Celebration Belle for our 95 mile  all day (10 to 11 hours) cruise to Cincinnati. The 770 passenger, Celebration Belle is fully ADA compliant and has a elevator onboard. From the moment we board, their crew provides exceptional service.  On this all day journey, we will enjoy 3 full meals
onboard  (breakfast, lunch, and a prime rib dinner), live entertainment (there is a dance floor), and enjoying spectacular views along the Ohio River!  We’ll be cruising 95 river miles and thru a lock and dam, and the Captain will narrate thru out the day. There are 4 observation areas, including 2 full observation decks with plenty of spacious outside seating, to relax and enjoy the scenic views.   Don’t forget to visit the gift shop on the 3rd deck and stop into the pilot house and say “hello” to the  Captain too!  There is a bench you can even sit up there to experience the wonderful views.  We spend the full day cruising the Ohio River past the towns of Vevay, Rising Sun, Aurora, and Lawrenceburg, Indiana and Carrollton, Rabbit Hash, and Stringtown, Kentucky. Upon arrival we will be met by out motorcoach and make our way to the hotel.

Day 3
Wednesday October 8:   Enjoy a restful morning at the hotel prior to making our way back to the festival area to board our vessel for the our lunch cruise. There will be riverboats from New Orleans, Memphis, Louisville, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Moline, and Minneapolis cruising this section of the Ohio River. We chose to enjoy our lunch cruise with views of Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky aboard the riverboat from Minnesota … The Anson – Betsey Northup is a combination of two great Mississippi River vessels. The Anson Northrup was named after the Minnesota pioneer who operated one of the first boats above St. Anthony Falls. The Anson Northrup was designed to fit under the low bridges in Minneapolis and started service in 1988. The side-wheeler’s overall height had to be kept under 22 feet because of the low bridges in that area of the river. It is 92 ft long and 33 ft wide. The Anson will be coupled with the Betsey Northrup to double the capacity. Mostly used for our public Sightseeing Cruises, the Betsey Northrup is separately powered in combination with the Anson Northrup. The enclosed main deck is heated, air-conditioned, and is their largest single room. The open second deck offers tremendous sightseeing. The barge is very quiet with the engines being on the towboat. The Anson & Betsey Northrup's Lunch Cruise offers a taste of a true legend - the Minnesota Hotdish. In addition,  we will enjoy delicious Honeycrisp Apple and Cranberry Glazed Chicken, Wild Rice and Dried Fruit Salad and a collection of savory sides. Upon returning to port, we will have time to walk the festival grounds. (At this time an event schedule has not been set, as this is the opening day.) All good things must come to an end as we head for home this evening.
